The Clippers are resisting Donovan Mitchell’s late heat
The Cavaliers host the Pistons to try to string together a fourth straight victory. Specifically, Cleveland can count Sam Merrill to take the first lead as the guard starts the game 3/3 from behind the arc (21-17). Conversely, for Detroit, the address is not there. In this first act, the Pistons shot only 20% from the distance, chained “air balls” and scored only two points in the last five minutes of this first quarter.
Quite logically, Cleveland leads after twelve minutes (28-19), but the trend reverses in the following period due to Daniss Jenkins (25 points, shooting 7/10, from distance 6/7). The leader started by hitting two long shots in quick succession, then it was Cleveland’s turn to suffer an offensive breakdown as Kenny Atkinson’s men went five minutes without a shot.
Detroit then took advantage of the opportunity to tie the game Cade Cunningham (27 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists) then the Pistons star finds Duncan Robinson to give the advantage to the Michigan franchise (46-44). In the process, they went on a 10-0 run during which Daniss Jenkins scored his fifth game-winning shot of the quarter. The sophomore doesn’t settle down and turns the “and one” and, at the buzzer of this first half, fires the sixth arrow from a long distance which hits the target (66-56).
Cleveland is close to being robbed
After Daniss Jenkins, it’s her turn Donovan Mitchell (30 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) to warm up. The six-time All-Star starts with five points on two straight possessions, and JB Bickerstaff immediately takes a timeout. This suspension of the game does not calm the number 45 who makes another 3-point shot to bring his team back within one possession (66-64). The full-back then takes two more shots from distance, but the first one is blocked Isaiah Stewart while the other ends with a “ball of air”.
If the Cavaliers manage to tie it at 80 all around, they can’t advance, and Detroit still leads going into the final act (87-82). The fourth quarter in which the Pistons take a ten-point lead Poor Ivey (92-82). However, the Cavs and especially Donovan Mitchell are not giving up.
The latter adds, alone, 7-0 and brings Cleveland to within four lengths, and follows him Darius Garland which allows the home team to return to within two points (108-106) with a little more than a minute to play.
Quite logically, the ball reaches the hands of Donovan Mitchell, but he grinds his teeth against the good defense of Isaiah Stewart. On the other side of the field, Dennis Jenkins is missing, besidesAusar Thompson return the ball to the circle by touching it. That last action sealed the fate of this matchup as Cleveland was forced to send Dennis Jenkins to shoot four free throws and he didn’t miss.
Detroit won 114-110 and is now preparing to host a six-game home streak. The Cavaliers will have a chance to right this wrong next Tuesday when they host the Pacers.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– A perfect second quarter by Dennis Jenkins. After a complicated start to the match, the Pistons managed to get back into the game through Dennis Jenkins. Leader delivered a perfect second quarter with 17 points, including six awarded shots on as many attempts, including one just before halftime, and a +/- of +19. If he was more discreet after the break, Dennis Jenkins made four free throws at the end of the game to seal the victory for the Pistons.
– Donovan Mitchell tried everything, to no avail. During the first clash between the two teams which ended with Cleveland winning, Donovan Mitchell was a nightmare for the Pistons defense and finished with 35 points. This week, he woke up in the second half. While his team was ten points behind at halftime, “Spida” brought his team back to four points with chain shots right after the break. Same story at the end of the meeting. Donovan Mitchell went on a 7-0 run of his own to get Cleveland back within two possessions, but once again it wasn’t enough to regain the lead. The point guard ends up chipping away at the Pistons defense and can’t let his team win.
– Determined offensive rebound. Despite the absence of their best jump ie Jalen DurenThe Pistons won the rebound (45-44) and proved why they were one of the best teams in the League in this area. As Cleveland is on the verge of pulling off a heist, Dennis Jenkins has a potential game ball in his hands, but misses. Except that on the rebound, Ausar Thompson gets the advantage De’Andre Hunter and return the ball to the circle. This tap sealed the fate of this matchup and allowed Detroit to leave Cleveland with a victory.
