Rich Paul is ‘high’ on the Hawks as a trade destination for Anthony Davis, but there’s a catch

The The Atlanta Hawks were has been struggling lately, currently sitting at 17-20 after a recent road loss in the by the hands of the Toronto Raptors. All of the struggles in recent weeks have led some fans to wonder if a change is on the horizon for the team.

One name that has come up multiple times in these rumors is that of the Dallas Mavericks Anthony Davis.

Recently, NBA insider Marc Stein reported on his Substack that Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, would be “high” on the Hawks as a potential trade destination, but there was a catch.

“At this point, there is no significant traction, league sources say, in trade talks between Atlanta and Dallas to trade Anthony Davis,” Stein added.

He also noted that “delivering multiple expiring contracts in Davis’ theoretical contract — with the 32-year-old under contract for more than $58 million next season and retaining a player option for 2027-28 worth nearly $63 million — would be very, very expensive for the Hawks.”

All of the Davis trade talk comes amid heightened speculation that the Tree Young era in Atlanta could soon be coming to an end. The Hawks’ struggles with Young on the court are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, and many fans felt it was no coincidence that the team was able to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks last week without the point guard being in the lineup due to injury.

Stein pointed to the possibility of the Hawks adding to Davis’ expensive salary and Young picking up his player option for next season, which would make them a pretty expensive roster for a team that has finished in the playoffs four years in a row.

Either way, the Hawks will next take the floor on Monday night for a rematch with the Raptors at 7:30 PM ET.
