Why CJ McCollum fell out against the 76ers amid Tree Young trade rumors

The Washington Wizards they’ve been playing somewhat improved basketball lately, still well below the playoff line in the Eastern Conference, but finally resembling a competitive NBA team. Earlier this week, Wizards were in the center trade mill when it was announced that he was playing for the Atlanta Hawks Trae Young and the team they worked together to find a new team, and many pointed to Washington as a reasonable trade partner.

Any trade for Young would almost certainly involve shipping CJ McCollum back to the Hawks, and on Wednesday the team got an interesting one update related injuries shooting guard status for that night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

“Wizards say CJ McCollum, who hasn’t missed a game all season, will miss tonight’s game against the 76ers with right quad soreness,” ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel reported on X, formerly Twitter.

As Siegel pointed out, McCollum has yet to miss a game this season, so the timing of this injury is certainly interesting as trade rumors continue to swirl around the franchise.

At this point, it’s unclear what other than McCollum the Wizards might have to give up to acquire Young, who would help speed up their rebuild and give them the first true general they’ve had since John Wall left town.

Either way, the Wizards and 76ers are scheduled to tip off Wednesday night at 7:00 PM ET from Philly, and McCollum is out for that contest.
