LeBron James’ All-NBA streak in jeopardy after missing 17th game

With LeBron James is out for Los Angeles LakersHeading into Wednesday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs, the 41-year-old’s streak of being named to the All-NBA team is in jeopardy. This was James’s 17th game missed this season, making him eligible against the NBA’s mandate of at least 65 games played to be eligible for postseason awards.

It has been 21 consecutive seasons that LeBron James has been selected to the All-NBA team, and the only season in which he was not was his rookie year in 2003-04. Since James returned from a nerve injury that sidelined him for the first 14 games of the season, the Lakers have gone two straight games.

The first of those sets took place on December 4 and 5, against the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics, while James missed the Celtics game. The second set of back-to-back games was this week against the New Orleans Pelicans and Spurs. With James ruled out for the Spurs game, it looks like he is the current plan is for James in the back is in the air. Obviously that could change as the season progresses.

But if he doesn’t, James won’t be named to the All-NBA team for the first time since his freshman year. The Lakers have two more back-to-back streaks in January alone.

While not being selected for season-ending honors is certainly something different for James, his main priority is his health and being able to be on the court for the Lakers to make the playoffs.

In the latest All-Star voting results, James is eighth among Western Conference vote-getters and 13th overall. While the coaches will likely select him as a backup, his streak as a starter will likely end as well.

James has appeared in 18 games so far this season, averaging just over 33 minutes per game. He averaged 21.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.0 steals on 51.2 percent shooting from the field, 32.2 percent from the 3-point line and 71.2 percent from the free throw line.
