How the Wizards turned Bradley Beal into Trae Young amid the Hawks trade

The Washington Wizards‘ acquisition Trae Young Wednesday it did not suddenly appear overnight. Instead, he capped a two-and-a-half-year run of calculated roster moves that began with the decision to move on from Bradley Beal and reset the long-term direction of the franchise.

Washington started the process in June 2023 by trading Beal, whose contract included a rare no-trade clause, for Chris Paul, six second-round picks and four trade picks. Given the contract limitations, the return emphasized flexibility and future assets rather than current star power.

Paul was never viewed as a long-term solution in Washington, but his contract and veteran value made for an option. That flexibility materialized when the Wizards traded Paul for Jordan Poole and a 2030 first-round pick, adding a younger scorer and valuable draft capital.

The next phase focused on financial maneuvering. Poole’s long-term salary limited roster flexibility and timeline alignment, prompting another turnaround. Washington moved Poole for CJ McCollum, whose expiring contract immediately opened up cap space while preserving trade value.

Greg Finberg of Bullets Forever took his X (formerly known as Twitter), exposing the entire string leading to the final outcome.

With McCollum’s expiring salary in hand, the Wizards have positioned themselves to act when the right opportunity presents itself. Washington eventually used that flexibility to acquire Young, turning the short-term reliever into a franchise centerpiece.

Throughout the process, the Wizards accumulated seven overall draft picks and four trade picks while maintaining control over their salary structure. Each transaction built incremental value, allowing the front office to avoid hasty decisions or restrictive commitments.

The approach reflects a philosophical shift focused on patience, leverage and timing rather than chasing immediate relevance. The youth now becomes the focal pointwhile retained draft capital ensures continued flexibility as the Wizards now shape their next competitive window around the 26-year-old point guard.
