Detroit, Tarik Skubal scheduled for arbitration hearing

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal is looking for a new contractand he could get it through arbitration.

It comes after his side and the Tigers reportedly failed to agree an agreement following an exchange of salary details on Thursday. While there’s still a chance both sides can work out a new deal, it looks like Skubal and the Tigers referred to an arbitration hearingas reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

“No resolution was reached today in the Tariq Skubal salary arbitration negotiations. The two sides could still reach an agreement before the arbitration hearing later this month, but for now they are scheduled for a hearing,” Nightingale said via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday.

Skubal and the Tigers avoided arbitration the previous two seasons. He signed a one-year, $2.65 million deal in 2024 and went on to win the 2024 American League Cy Young Award after winning the Triple Crown while leading the AL in wins (18-4), ERA (2.39) ERA and strikeouts (228 — also a Big 31 best).

In 2025, he signed another one-year contract, but for a bigger deal, which amounted to $10.15 million. Skubal then proved he was worth all that money — and more — as he went 13-6 and posted a 2.21 ERA through 31 starts on his way to winning another Cy Young Award in the AL.

The 29-year-old should command a bigger bag this time around than what he signed for in the previous two years with the Tigers, either through an extension with the Tigers or through arbitration, especially given his impressive work over the past few seasons. The question is only the final figure.
