Paolo Banchero’s fan discourse gets a stern warning from Austin Rivers
Austin Rivers delivered a warning message yes Orlando Magic fans regarding the recent discourse surrounding the star forward Paolo Bancherosaying that public criticism can have a tangible effect on players during the season.
Rivers addressed this topic on a recent episode of Off Guard with Austin Rivers, pointing out how a team’s success in games without a star can inadvertently shape narratives and scrutiny. He emphasized that players are aware of online chatter and that prolonged criticism can affect confidence, energy and approach on the field.
“Paolo needs to be talked about, bro. I’m a big fan of the kid. I love Paolo. I honestly think when a team has success without their best player, it just causes something. It’s not Paolo’s fault. It happens to the best players. The fans have to be careful how they talk about how they feel about their players so we don’t think about them. go on our Twitter or Instagram after every game and then they get s**t when a player like Paolo starts playing with a certain energy about him – like he doesn’t want to to be there.
Banchero, a 23-year-old former Rookie of the Year and one-time All-Star, has seen his hitting decline this season. Through 30 games, he is averaging 20.9 points, down from a season-high 25.9 points, along with 8.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. He is shooting 45.3 percent from the field and a poor 25.2 percent from three-point range while logging 33.7 minutes per contest.
I agree with @AustinRivers25 here, but also to be fair, a lot of the buzz and talk surrounding Paolo comes OUTSIDE of Orlando.
There are certainly criticisms and questions from within, but most of the hate comes from other fans trying to bring him down. pic.twitter.com/3IAfFbgiVR

Austin Rivers warns Magic fans as attention grows over Paolo Banchero

The contrast in results has fueled discussion at the local level. Orlando is 7–3 in games without Buncher this season and 15–15 when he’s in the lineup, which Rivers mentioned while cautioning against jumping to conclusions in the short term.
“It’s not the same Paolo Banchero that I know. He’s shooting a lot of hard twos. He doesn’t have the same shot in his game. You can see he’s frustrated. He’s always looking at the refs. His body language isn’t great. You can feel it. That’s the thing that everybody’s talking about in Orlando. That’s the thing that everybody’s talking about in Orlando. We need Palo to get going. Paolo.”
Rivers said the backlash created a feedback loop between fan talk and performance on the field.
“You all have to be careful with that s*t because the players see it, feel it. And then something that was never nothing becomes something and I’m not putting all of this on Orlando fans. And Paolo is guilty of this. And this is not something that can’t be undone. A win cures everything. They get five in a row, he doesn’t give five in a row. I didn’t hear anyone talking about a trade last night. His team is having success, that’s a good thing – that created something, that was everywhere in Orlando.
Rivers framed the situation as a reminder that momentum, winning and patience often change narratives, while continued scrutiny can amplify temporary struggles during an NBA season.
