Victor Vembanyama scores an extremely rare defensive feat in the Bucks clash

Victor Vembanyama is locked as always, if his new haircut is any indication. In his first game after shaving his head bald San Antonio Spurs‘ loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Wembanyama pulled off an ultra-rare defensive feat in the plays that led to the Spurs’ convincing victory — a 119-101 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Vembanjama suffered a fear of injury early in the game after bumping knees with Giannis Antetokounmpo. But the Spurs star returned to action and finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks; in recording those two blocks, Vembanja added further into his career for a rebound, and in the process, became the fourth-fastest player in NBA history to tally 500 or more career blocks, doing so in 143 games.

Only Manute Ball (121 games), David Robinson (124) and Mark Eaton (136) have reached the 500-block club quicker than Wembanyama, a remarkable feat for the Spurs star.

What makes this accomplishment even bigger for Vembanyama is that the NBA is more perimeter-oriented than ever, and opposing players know better than to challenge the Spurs star at the rim. But Wemby still gets plenty of blocks like nobody’s business, a testament to how elite a rim protector he is.

Everyone expected it Spurs to lock up after losing their first game of the season against the Thunder, and that’s exactly what they did. They led the Bucks by 37 points until the end of the third quarter, and it is quite certain that they could have won by an even more convincing margin if they had reason to do so.

That Wembanjama is healthy enough to finish the game is the best part of this win for Spurs, as keeping him at or near 100 percent is paramount to their fighting chances.
