Dallas improves on a perfect streak after embarrassing the Knicks at MSG

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the New York Knicks 114–97 at Madison Square Garden despite entering the game with a serious disadvantage. With Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Derek Lively II and Daniel Gafford sidelined, head coach Jason Kidd leaned on veteran Dwight Powell to stabilize a depleted frontcourt and maintain structure on both ends of the floor.

The win continued a steady turnaround for the Mavericks after a bumpy opening stretch of the season. Through their first 18 games, Dallas struggled to establish a rhythm as injuries and rotation instability disrupted continuity. Recent performances suggest progress, with improved execution, a sharper defensive focus and clearer offensive roles emerging across the line-up.

Powell logged 28 minutes and provided a steady presence despite his modest scoring output. He finished with two points, five rebounds and two assists, but his screening, positioning and defensive discipline played a key role in limiting Karl-Anthony Towns’ offense.

The Knicks returned superstar Jaylen Brunson from injury, but were unable to capitalize on the mismatches on the interior. The Mavs controlled the tempo throughout the second half, extended their lead in the third quarter and silenced the crowd as the execution tightened on both ends.

After the away win, StatMuse highlighted a statistical trend related to Powell’s expanded role this season. The analytics agency posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), with a note the squad is undefeated when Powell plays at least 25 minutes.

“Fun fact: The Mavericks are undefeated this season when Dwight Powell plays at least 25 minutes.

That mark now stands at 9–0. Kidd has relied on the veteran’s 11-year experience to anchor rotations, while younger players carry more responsibilities to get results. His communication, screening and positioning helped make reading easier for guards and wings during extended minutes.

Dallas leads the tough Western Conference, currently 12th with more than half the season completed. A dominant performance on the road on Monday reinforced the importance of execution over star power. As roles solidify and health improves, The Mavericks aim to build momentum and are positioning themselves for a meaningful late-season push.
