The Warriors will pursue Trey Murphy III to trade the buzzer beater

The The Golden State Warriors have some big decisions to make ahead of them between now and the NBA trade deadline after Jimmy Butler’s torn ACL. That brutal injury setback likely ended any realistic chance the Warriors had to compete this season, but that doesn’t mean Golden State’s front office is ready to throw in the towel and become sellers at the deadline.

Most recently, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported the name which the Warriors continue to market.

Siegel noted that the Warriors “continue to chase Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans, a player the Warriors have made several calls about this season, sources said. Outside of the dream scenario of getting a superstar, Murphy has long been the Dubs’ top trade target this year…”

The Warriors are seemingly willing to part with the forced capital in order to bring in a piece of winning, according to recent comments made by CEO Mike Dunleavy.

The Warriors also face ongoing turmoil surrounding Jonathan Cumminga, who recently demanded a trade from the organization but is likely to have an increased role following Butler’s injury. Kuminga scored 20 points in the first game since Butler’s injury earlier this week against the Toronto Raptors.

However, Siegel noted that “If Kuminga remains on the roster after the trade deadline, it will be because Murphy’s price will remain too high for Golden State.”

At this point, none of the calls the Pelicans made for Murphy III appear to have been lucrative enough for them to pull out of trading the talented wing, who is still relatively young and theoretically has room to grow.

Either way, the Warriors will next take the court Thursday night on the road against the Dallas Mavericks.
