NBPA references MLK with statement on Minneapolis shooting

The National Basketball Association released a statement after ICE agents shot and killed a man in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Alex Pretty, an intensive care nurse, was identified as the victim.
The NBPAunion representing NBA players, calls for words the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in their statement. The statement was posted on the Ks account of the NBPA.
“There comes a time when silence is treason,” Dr. King said, as noted in the organization’s social media post.
“After the news of yet another fatal shooting in Minneapolis, a city that has been at the forefront of the fight against injustice, NBA players can no longer remain silent,” the statement said. “Now more than ever, we must defend the right to free speech and stand in solidarity with the people of Minnesota who are protesting and risking their lives to seek justice.”
Saturday’s shooting followed another incident in January when an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good, a Minnesota woman.
“The brotherhood of NBA players, like the United States itself, is a community enriched by global citizens, and we refuse to allow the flames of division to threaten the civil liberties that should protect us all,” the statement said. “The NBPA and its members extend our deepest condolences to the families of Alex Pretty and Renee Goode, just as our thoughts continue to be with the safety and well-being of all members of our community.”
After these incidents, several professional athletes including Breanna Stewart and Tyrese Halliburton have spoken out against ICE. ICE stands for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
After the latest incident, The NBA has postponed the game scheduled for Saturday between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors. The match is scheduled for Sunday evening.
Investigations into these shootings are ongoing by federal law enforcement.
