NBA: Golden State Warriors’ victory in Minnesota took place in a “gloomy atmosphere” – Steve Kerr
Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said his team won a “weird, sad” game at the Minnesota Timberwolves in a “somber atmosphere” following the fatal shooting of an intensive care nurse by immigration agents in Minneapolis.
The death of 37-year-old Alex Pretty on Saturday it was the second time in less than a month that an American citizen was killed by federal agents in the city, sparking angry protests both locally and in other parts of the US.
The Timberwolves held a moment of silence for Pretty before Sunday’s game, which was punctuated by anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) chants from fans.
ICE operation in Minnesota at the behest of President Donald Trump’s administration has been going on for more than six weeks. ICE agents have the power to stop, detain, and arrest people they suspect are in the U.S. illegally.
Renee Good, another Minnesota resident, was killed by an ICE agent on January 7th.
“Honestly, I felt like the (Timberwolves) group was suffering,” Kerr said after the Warriors’ 111-85 victory.
“It was one of the weirdest, saddest games I’ve ever been in. You could feel the somber atmosphere.
“Their team, you could tell they were struggling with everything that was going on. And what the city was going through. So it was a very sad night.”
Warriors forward Moses Moody, who had 19 points with eight rebounds and two blocks, said you could “feel the weight of the city” during the game, which was postponed 24 hours after Pretty’s death.
“I couldn’t think of too many different times when so many people are together in the middle of a situation like this, so you definitely felt it,” Moody said.
Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 26 points and moved into a tie with Paul Pierce for 19th place on the all-time scoring list – he finished the game with 26,397.
Anthony Edwards scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who lost their fifth straight game.
