Kel’el Vare still has to make do with crumbs

Kel'el Ware (Heat)In Miami “the case” Kel’el Ware continues to stimulate discussion. Hamstring discomfort and a four-game absence, the interior returned Wednesday against Orlando and then resumed Thursday night at Chicago. Like before his stint in the infirmary, the rookie (15th pick in the 2024 draft) however remains confined to a limited role that has many people in Florida questioning. Even more so after his production against the Bulls: 12 points (4/6 shooting, including 3/4 threes), 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks…in barely 12 minutes.

Between Kel’el Ware and Erik Spoelstra, the relationship often feels like a surprising “I love you, me neither.” On Wednesday, after 6 minutes and 40 seconds given to the pivot, the coach insisted on caution, as the player had just come off an injury: “It was simply to facilitate his return, we’ll see where it takes us.”he explained. Erik Spoelstra also suggested that, aside from the physicality of being a rotation pick, Miami wanted to preserve the automatics built during a generally positive “journey”: “We’ll just continue with the normal rotation used during our away series. We’ll see.”

Minutes pretty well spent

The message is not ideal for Kel’el Ware, who has been absent for a good portion of this trip. The decision was all the more surprising since the Heat suffered damage in the third quarter against the Magic. Twenty-four hours later, the game in Chicago might also look like a fit for the new “economy” after a muscle injury. However, Kel’el Ware was well-dressed and entered the first quarter this time.

And he responded immediately: aggressive, confident behind the arc (2/3 on 3-pointers in his first sequence), and above all deterring near the circle with two spectacular counterattacks that confirm a clear improvement on a physical level. Erik Spoelstra appreciated that…while keeping him in this backup role.

“The benches have played well in these last matches during our ‘journey’, they have gained confidence”the technician is more detailed. “The five with Drew Smith, Simone Fontecchio, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Nikola Jovic, and now we’re adding Kel’el… These guys really gave us a boost. The starters like it when the substitutes come in and play well. I like this dynamic. When we were at our best this season, the bench brought us matches like this. I hope it continues.

Used on short sequences

Erik Spoelstra also expanded on the Jovic-Ware duo: “Everybody wants to play well individually, but at the end of the day you want the scoreboard to go in your favor. We have two really talented interiors. Not just Niko, but Kel’el, and Kel’el gave us really good minutes tonight. I’m managing these two promising interiors. And we’ve got to manage these replacements who have played really well. We’re at a point where we need contributions, regardless of minutes.

In fact, Kel’el Ware has averaged 14 minutes since Jan. 7, in eight games played: a far cry from what one might imagine after his early season promise, his regular flashes and a few notable bookings. Annoyed by his inconsistency and a certain lack of concentration, Erik Spoelstra seems to prefer using him as an “impact player” for short sequences instead of giving him a more difficult and exposed role.

The main stakeholder focuses on efficiency: “How do I read my stats? If I have an impact on the match. This is how I see my numbers. I try to do what I can with my minutes, regardless of the time of the game. I try to make an impact and provide positive minutes.”he slipped in the locker room on Thursday.

The question of context remains: If the situation doesn’t change, Kel’el Ware could become a trade deadline adjustment variable, and his name is already being floated in various scenarios.

If he’s still in Miami after Feb. 5, he’ll likely have to hang on… and continue to prove, minute by minute, that his talent deserves a bigger spot in the rotation.
