Allen Iverson is taking Sixers fans back 25 years
Sixers 2000/01. tonight they were in the spotlight again, and as expected, Allen Iverson did the show. At halftime of the victory against the Pelicans, on the mark The MVP matchup of Joel Embiid’s regimemany members of the staff, as well as former president Pat Croce, accompanied “Odgovor” to the center of the field, together with several teammates at the time,Eric Snow there is George Lynch passing through Kevin Ollie, Jumain Jones or even Todd McCullochwhile it’s late Singh Mutombo he was represented by his wife and daughter.
It was once again a chance to see how much this season has affected an entire generation of fans, who enjoyed chants of “MVP” after Allen Iverson entered the court in “showman” fashion, arms wide open and thumb under his ear to encourage the crowd, as he did during his prime.
Glorious losers
If this team wrote the last page of the great history of the Sixers by winning the Eastern Conference championship for the last time (before losing 4-1 in the finals to the Lakers of Kobe and Shaq), Allen Iverson insisted above all on the human adventure, with his teammates and with this audience of enthusiasts.
“Unbelievable, it’s a crazy feeling, it brings back good memories. Just to be able to remember these stories, to laugh at them and to be all together in one place, it was a wonderful moment and something I will cherish forever.” he stated, clearly more involved as during his Australian tour.
So, before his exploits and personal records, which were many that season, with the titles of MVP and champion of the Eastern Conference, with which the whole group posed for a family photo, Allen Iverson above all retains the growing enthusiasm of the fans, seven years deprived of the playoffs, from 1991 to the return to the top in 1998.
“I remember our first playoff game, the people in front of the hall, the noise inside. We knew they were in the same state of mind as us, fully engaged and it was just something magnificent. The only thing we could have done better, of course, would have been to bring the title back. But if that’s how that season went and our relationship with the fans, I think it will go down like any other experience,” unlike he continued. “It was already good to get this far and have a chance to win the title, after everything that happened during this busy season, with injuries and everything. We fell short, but we faced a great team and the best team won. But we had no regrets because we knew we gave it our all.”
“We have the best fans in the world”
Twenty-five years later, the city is buzzing with anticipation and hopes to experience another sensation in the future, at least as strong, with the emergence of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe to back up veterans Paul George and Joel Embiid. Known as one of the toughest and tightest in the league, the home crowd can also prove to be a great sixth man… provided they get their jerseys wet.
“We have the best fans in the world. They came every night to support us, even in difficult moments of the season. We tried to keep this together, and the city was behind us until the end, and that’s what they’re still doing today. Seeing you undress on the field is all they ever cared about. They don’t care if you play bad, as long as you give 100% every night, play every game like it’s your last.”Allen Iverson recalled.
The Sixers will celebrate the 25th anniversary of this great epic again on four occasions, against the Spurs on March 3, the next day against the Jazz, then on March 23 and April 12, respectively against the Thunder and Bucks.
