New York ‘not showing aggression’ in Giannis trade talks

The The New York Knicks are back lately, winners of six straight games after a win at home on Sunday night over the Los Angeles Lakers. Still, that doesn’t stop the trade rumor mill from spinning around the team, especially regarding their alleged pursuit of the Milwaukee Bucks’ disgruntled superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
However, ESPN NBA Insider Brian Windhorst recently reported on the Knicks’ recent winning ways can affect their pursuit of Antetokounmpo.
“The Knicks believe in this team … They’re not showing that aggression to get Giannis right now and I think that’s because they like this team,” Windhorst reported on ESPN’s Get Up, according to Heat Central on X, formerly Twitter.
Indeed, the Knicks are looking more like the team they thought they would be during this recent streak, though not necessarily against the best competition.
For much of January, the Knicks were cascading down the Eastern Conference standings, while Karl-Anthony Towns was still struggling to adjust to his new role under head coach Mike Brown, and the team as a whole seemed to lack synergy on the court.
NBA teams putting too much stock into a midseason winning streak and not making the moves they need to make as a result is a story as old as time, and Knicks fans will surely hope that this current streak isn’t the only thing holding the team back from trading for Antetokounmpo, if indeed they have an offer the Bucks are in the running.
Still, it’s also worth considering that botched big-name trades, especially in the middle of the season, are more common than not in recent NBA history, so New York might be wise to hold off until the offseason.
Either way, the Knicks next take the court on Tuesday night against the Washington Wizards on the road.
