Where Timberwolves stand on Giannis trade after 3-team deal

On Tuesday afternoon, The Minnesota Timberwolves were involved in a three-team trade with the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons sending Mike Conley to Chicago, according to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charani. The Timberwolves did not receive a player in the deal and sent the trade mainly for financial reasons, as their luxury tax bill has dropped significantly, according to ESPN NBA insider Bobby Marks.
Now, more information is coming to light on the Timberwolves’ reported pursuit of the disgruntled Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo after this deal.
“Some people think he’ll be on the move before Thursday to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Other people think he’ll stay with the Bucks until the trade deadline,” Brett Siegel reported, according to Clutch Scoops, via ClutchPoints on X, formerly Twitter.
“…what’s going on in Minnesota right now? Are they making a play for Giannis Antetokounmpo? Or is this a play maybe for Ja Morant? Or maybe a play for both of these guys?” he wondered.
Meanwhile, NBA insider Jake Fisher reported more on the matter financial incentives which Minnesota got with this deal.
“Told the Wolves are cashing in on a three-team deal with Detroit and Chicago that moves Mike Conley Jr. to the Bulls and trades Kevin Huerter and Jaden Ivey,” Fisher reported on X.
“Minnesota remains in active pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, sources say,” he added.
A potential duo of Antetokounmpo and Anthony Edwards would certainly be a scary prospect for the rest of the league, and it remains to be seen how much the Timberwolves would have to gut their existing core to make such a deal possible with the Bucks.
Either way, the NBA trade deadline is set for Thursday afternoon. The Timberwolves will next take the floor on Wednesday night against the Toronto Raptors.
