Kel’el Ware is getting real about being involved in Giannis’ trade talks

MIAMI – S Miami Heat rumors at Thursday’s trade deadline, one thing’s for sure: they won’t be acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpoas the Milwaukee Bucks have signaled to teams that the franchise will keep him for now. One player who was in these of trade rumors was Heat center Kel’el Warewho spoke after Thursday’s practice about how he feels about being included in such conversations.

Ware previously spoke briefly about being aware his name was being tossed around in speculation in a theoretical deal that would send the 22-year-old to Milwaukee in exchange for Antetokounmpo. With the talks buried, at least until the summer, this has flowed for the young centre, focusing more on improving the field.

“I feel like I was in the same situation I was in this summer,” Ware said. “So, I mean, it is what it is. If it happens, it happens. If not, I’m still going to be here. You’re still going to be here to try to make the team, so you can play.”

However, there could be some mental clarity for Ware now that trade talks are at a standstill, as when asked if he would like to stay in Miami, he would say he’s “always happy to be here” and “that’s never changed.”

Miami captain Bam Adebayo spoke of his advice to the team during the uncertain time, yes “control the controls”, a phrase repeated by Ver.

“I mean, just like any other day, the whole week of the trade deadline,” Ware said of how he approached the moment. “Just stay positive. Go in, put in the work, no matter what the situation is, because it could happen, it probably won’t happen… Focus on my game and control the controls.”

The The Heat center in Ware was monitored during his playing time by fans carefully, making the young star a top story for every game. There’s no denying the extra attention Ware is getting, and he talks about how surprising it is to get this kind of focus.

“Yeah, I would say so, I think it’s a little bit new for me with everything that’s out there, everything that’s surrounding me right now,” Ware told ClutchPoints.

Still, there could be some positives to take with it, as fans see Ware as a building block for Miami’s future.

“I mean, yeah, of course. I feel like when you have positive words around you, positive things around you, I feel like it’s just going to help you be positive in general,” Ware said while being selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

Ware’s playing time has been on display throughout the season, but especially in last Saturday’s game against the Chicago Bulls, when he played all but three minutes off the bench in the second half of that loss. Seeing the inconsistent time, Ware would even go so far as to say how fans have approached him in public about his playing time, even saying it happens “quite often.”

“Yeah, it happened,” Ver laughed. “Pretty much I’d say….If I’m walking the streets or whatnot.”

“I can’t really say much,” Ware continued when asked how he responds to fans. “It’s not my problem to deal with.”

Heat’s Kel’el Ware is candid about his second NBA season

Doc Ware will represent the Heat at Rising Stars 2026 event during All-Star weekend, there’s no denying the talent the Indiana University product has as a seven-foot-tall man with elite athleticism. However, Ware admitted to ClutchPoints that his sophomore season wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

“Some ups and downs,” Ware laughed. “But I mean, you know, hopefully everything can change, and just be.”

Ware is averaging 11.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 53.5 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from three-point range. One person under fire for the decisions made with Vera and his usage was the head coach Erik Spoelstrawho said it was “awesome” that the center had a huge amount of fan attention.

“I want a fan base that’s excited about our players, excited about our young talent,” Spoelstra said. “This should be fun, it should be exciting, we’ve had more young talent with ability and potential in our building than we’ve had in as long as I can remember, probably for Caron (Butler) and Dwyane (Wade), Lamar (Odom), that group.”

“We want to push them, move them, cultivate them, encourage them, instill confidence in them, hold them accountable, all of that, to continue to try to help them reach their potential,” Spoelstra continued. “But it’s exciting, I don’t mind, I don’t see all the stories, but I’m fully committed and excited to work with Kel’el and help him reach that potential.”

Either way, Ware is looking to further improve with Miami now that the trade deadline is in the rearview mirror, with the next opportunity coming Friday against the Boston Celtics.
