Matt Ryan doesn’t talk about capital in free agency, the NFL draft after hiring a GM

Emphasis on structure and accountability within Atlanta Falcons came into sharp focus Thursday as the organization clarified how decision-making will work under its new leadership group.

Sokoli president of football operations Matt Ryan addressed questions about authority after hiring CEO Ian Cunninghamstressing that personnel control rests firmly with the newly installed GM.

Atlanta overhauled its front office in January by bringing Ryan into an executive role, then recently hired Cunningham to oversee roster construction. With a franchise legend added to the leadership team, questions quickly arose about how responsibilities would align, although the organizational structure remained clearly defined.

Ryan moved determinedly to close the story. Speaking to CBS Sports in a clip later shared by Ari Meirov of the 33rd team on X (formerly known as Twitter), he emphasized that Cunningham has complete control over free agency and draft decisions as the Falcons prepare for a crucial offseason.

“Ian drives this boat and he’s the one that drives us forward,” said Ryan. “This is Ian’s regular season right now. He’s in it and driving the ship for us.”

The Falcons’ new president of football operations also acknowledged his transition from the field to the front office, admitting that aspects of the draft process will be completely foreign to him.

“I’ve never sat in a draft meeting. Monday will be my first time sitting in a draft meeting. I’ve got a lot to learn — to sit, to watch, to be a fly on the wall.”

The timing is significant for Atlanta. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. continues to rehabilitate from season-ending knee surgery, and The Falcons are missing a 2026 first-round pick after the James Pierce Jr. trade. Those realities heighten the importance of maximizing value through free agency and later rounds of the draft.

The former Atlanta signal caller’s comments reinforced the clear separation of roles. Cunningham is tasked with building the roster, while the leadership above him focuses on supporting, guiding and shaping the organization’s long-term vision.
