Sacramento signs rookie big man to standard contract

Thanks Two for one Sacramento Kings trade when they brought in De’Andre Hunter in exchange for Dennis Schroeder and Keon Ellis, they created an open roster spot so they could convert one of their promising young players from a two-way contract to a standard contract. On Thursday night, the Kings finalized the agreement with rookie big man Dylan Cardwell, signing him to a four-year, $8.28 million contract.

This is a a rare win for the Kings organization it is very necessary for stacking victories. Cardwell has done nothing but impress in the limited minutes he’s been given, showing his potential as a rim-protecting glass cleaner who can carve out a long NBA career for himself.

Cardwell is on the older side as a rookie, as he is already 24 years old. Regardless, the Auburn product is averaging 1.7 blocks in 20 minutes per contest. The Kings are in dire need of defense, and he’s one of the few players on the roster who consistently brings energy to the floor whenever he’s on the floor.

With The Kings will likely revisit the Domantas Sabonis trade Come the offseason, as they came close to dealing him before this year’s deadline, Cardwell could play a bigger role with the Kings next season. In fact, if the Kings decide to give Sabonis days off to ensure they get the best odds for the top pick, then he could be a player to watch moving forward as early as this season.

Kings don’t make nearly enough trades

The Kings did well to clear up the backcourt logjam, but all they did was clog up their cap space with Hunter’s contract. Moreover, they failed to replace Sabonis, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, and the same problems exist for this roster that makes no sense.

Sacramento could blow this offseason, but they may need to be more realistic about their expectations of what they’ll get in return.
