Why Victor Wembanyama “trusts” Spurs’ trade deadline decision

Despite reported interest in the move, v San Antonio Spurs did not make a trade before the NBA deadline. Second in the Western Conference standings for the better part of a month and a half and loaded with a talented young core, the organization has decided that February 5th will come and go no front office activity. Victor Vembanyama heard the lack of agreement loud and clear.
“If there’s any message to take from that, it’s that we trust who we are, we trust the process. And what I love is that the front office trusts these guys just like I do.”
Combine the Spurs in the next decade’s draft with theirs willingness to part ways with 2022 first-rounder Jeremy Sochanand there was an expectation that something could be done. The fact that no move has been made is just fine with Wemby.
“We’re on the same page.”
Vembanjama and The Spurs are easily enjoying their best season yet since the generational talent entered the league in 2023. A 135-123 win against the Dallas Mavericks they play side by side marked their own 35th win in 51 games. They won 34 games all last season.
De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell open trade deadline
The hardest part of the year is now over. At least, when it comes to things off the field. That’s according to Spurs guard Devin Vassell.
“Yeah, I’d say, for sure,” the sixth-year veteran responded when asked if the trade deadline was the worst part.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty, with the (rock) trade, like last year with the Luka (Doncic) trade. You never know what can happen. It’s obviously a stressful time, but we’re focused on the game.”
Spurs star De’Aaron Fox was himself a part of the mid-season trade relatively recently. While San Antonio’s deal to acquire him last February was the first time in his career that he was moved after seven and a half seasons with the Sacramento Kings, it wasn’t his first experience with a player before the All-Star break.
“I’m trying to think. In my nine years – well, let’s go on eight years – I’ve seen at least five or six of those trades,” Spurs’ second scorer admitted. “I mean, I don’t know if I’d say it’s what I expect, but a lot of things happen at the trade deadline.”
Vasell has yet to directly experience any kind of movement from one team to another. A first-round pick by the Silver and Black in 2020, the former Florida Seminole has ranked among the team’s top three scorers over the past three seasons. He is fourth this year with 14.3 points per game. They are the kind of credentials that are valued throughout the league.
“It’s definitely a lot. It’s a stressful time, not only for you, but for players that you might know, teammates that you might know. You look at your phone and you see something else and you just never know what’s going to happen next. I can’t wait for this trade deadline to be over, honestly,” Vasell said the day before the deadline.
Now it’s the rest of the season. And the question of whether Wasell, On Wednesday, Fox and Spurs are in line the trust placed in them.
