Mavericks’ Cooper Flagg tells Dirk Nowitzki what he really thinks about point guard Jason Kidd’s experiment

Cooper Flagg was a great phenom during the early stages of his professional basketball career with Dallas Mavericks. After dominating college basketball while playing for Duke last year, the Mavericks drafted him No. 1 overall in last year’s NBA draft. Flagg showed at Duke that he is adept at scoring, rebounding, ball handling and passing. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd recognized all of these talents and asked the 6-9 Flagg to play the Dallas point guard as a rookie.

This seemed like an odd request since Flagg could contribute the Mavericks in so many areas. Kidd made it difficult as Flagg had to adjust when asked to play in such a demanding position, and there were some problems at the beginning of the season. However, Flagg put sensational numbers on the board.
He is averaging a team-leading 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He is on his way to becoming an NBA superstar and winning multiple end-of-season awards.
In a conversation with the Hall of Fame and former Maverick Dirk Nowitzkihe said it took time to adjust to what Kidd was asking of him. “J Kidd wanted to throw me right into the fire, and now I’m reaping the benefits,” Flagg said.
Nowitzki told Flagg that he really admired the multiple advantages he had on the court, and remembered how different it was for him. “The only thing I wanted to do was score,” Noviticki said. “You can do so much more and I admire everything you do.”
It’s clear Flegg is getting more comfortable in the NBA every game, and he’s the player the Mavericks are building their team around.
