Ole Miss basketball player Chris Byrd claims he hasn’t heard any outcry from Texas fans

Since when The Ole Miss basketball team defeated Georgia in the victory game and the win over Mississippi State, the program has lost five straight, including Saturday’s 79-68 loss to the Texas Longhorns. As it is The Ole Miss basketball team is led by head coach Chris Byrd, there was a little extra personal touch to the contest because he coached the Texas program from 2021-23.
As expected, the crowd in Austin, Texas, was furious and showed their uneasiness with Byrd, who has coached the Rebels since 2023. Byrd would be asked after the loss about the reaction of Longhorns fans, but he downplayed it, saying he “didn’t really notice it,” even though it was “great home crowd” for Texas.
“No word coach, I really didn’t notice. I thought Saturday in Austin, Texas was a great home crowd for basketball,” Beard said, per Sports Illustrated’s Zach Dimmitt of the Longhorns. “I heard a few things from the student section, in and out of the floor, but nothing different than the things you hear at other big home-field advantages around the country.
“So I certainly wasn’t trying to avoid the question, but I was pretty locked in. But I was always like, I really never noticed anything in the crowd. I think that’s one of my strengths,” Byrd continued after the game.

The college basketball world could take this a few different ways, one is that the reactions got to him, or more likely, he was truly “locked in” to the game as he put it. There’s no denying he had to be with Ole Miss struggling, as the team is now 11-12, 3-7 in SEC play, as the program looks to end its skid on Wednesday against Alabama.
