Pelicans’ Trey Murphy gets real on 3-Point Contest snub

The NBA has officially announced the contenders for the league’s three-point contest on All-Star weekend, and there are some big names set to take part in the tournament. But one name that was surprisingly interrupted was New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III.
Murphy III currently ranks 11th in the league in three-point percentage, shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc. The Pelicans guard is also sixth in the league among players who attempt at least eight 3-pointers per game.
Still, Murphy III will not be participating in Saturday night’s contest.
Following the Pelicans’ 120-94 win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night, Murphy III was asked not to be named a competitor.
“I would participate if invited, for sure,” Trey Murphy III said during his postgame media availability Monday night.
“Do you see that as a flip?” one reporter asked.
“I’ll let you be the judge of that,” Murphy III replied with a smile.
Murphy III also hit 166 3-pointers this season, which is the sixth most among all players this season. In addition, the Pelicans forward is averaging career highs of 22.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 3.3 three-pointers per game in 35.8 minutes of action.
Every day I have the same approach of getting better and playing my game. At some point it will be recognized that I am one of the better scorers in the league. Until then, it is what it is. I’m going to keep working on my game, I’m going to keep shooting the ball like I’ve been doing. Not being in the three-point contest isn’t going to ruin my day, but it’s something I definitely saw and wasn’t the biggest fan of.”

Despite Murphy III’s career year, the Pelicans struggled against one of the worst teams in the NBA. Entering Tuesday, February 10, the Pelicans have the third-worst record in the NBA at 15-40, ahead of only the Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings.
