Back to the future for Kyle Anderson

When Kyle Anderson left the Grizzlies in 2022, the Memphis franchise was coming off a 56-win regular season and a promising playoff run, with a conference semifinal loss to the Warriors.

Ja Morant was then one of the rising stars of the NBA, a potential future face of the league and the future seemed promising for Taylor Jenkins’ troops. Almost four years later, Kyle Anderson is back in Memphis, but a lot has changed.

“It’s completely different. It’s not like when I was there.”, says the former Spurs playerwho then found no coach and only three teammates: Ja Moranta, Brandon Clark and Santi Aldama since Jaren Jackson Jr. and John Konchar were part of his trade.

One thing is always the same, however, according to him the Grizzlies have “best fans in the league”. “I tell a lot of people who misunderstand Memphis that it’s a beautiful city, with people who support you no matter what.

He is needed this season because Tennessee’s players are not as strong as they were in their first appearance, with only 20 wins and 32 losses and and the outgoing Ja Morant because at the end of the race in Memphis, with a career that has seriously declined from his extra-sporting and physical problems.

With his experience (32 years), in general, but also specifically in Memphis, Kyle Anderson can serve as a mentor, a guide. But it is clear that he has no intention of playing this role.

“I don’t want to come in here and start telling people what to do, I don’t want to use my voice like that.”he announces. “I’m here if the guys need me. Whenever I’m needed, to learn from my experience, I’m here to help. But I’m not going to act like a super veteran with 31 games left to play.”
