Jeremy Sochan surprisingly hits the buyout market after the trade deadline

The San Antonio Spurs to have decided to give up former lottery pick Jeremy Sochan in the period after NBA trade deadlineleague sources confirmed to ClutchPoints on Wednesday afternoon.

Socan, 22, was the ninth overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft by the Spurs. As a rookie through the 2022-23 season, Sochan hasn’t been a main part of head coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation this season and has logged just 49 minutes since the start of January.

After clearing waivers, Sochan will be one of the prominent names on the NBA buyout market, with several playoff contending teams expected to inquire about the young forward. Before the trade deadline, the New York Knicks were one of the teams that was interested in buying Sochan.

ESPN first reported Sochan’s release from the team.

When the trade deadline passed and Socan, who had hoped to be traded, remained on the Spurs’ roster, there was no indication that he would be bought out. Socan intended to stay in San Antonio and enter the offseason as a restricted free agent.

However, after falling out of the team’s rotation and not having a clear role, both sides decided it was best to move on now and allow Socan the opportunity to join a new team before the offseason.

Various teams will be tracking Socan in the next 48 hours before he clears waivers, and it’s not hard to imagine he already has several teams lined up to discuss a minimum contract for the rest of the 2025-26 season.

During the first two seasons of his career, the Spurs used Socan heavily due to his defensive abilities in multiple positions. Although he shot just 28.7 percent from 3-point range in his career, he can make an immediate difference coming off the bench for teams expected to contend in the postseason.

Appearing in 28 of the Spurs’ 53 games this season, Socan averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.0 assists in approximately 12.8 minutes per game.

The Spurs now have one open roster spot that can be used to sign players on the buyout market.
