The new president of the Euroleague, will Chus Bueno be a “bridge” with the NBA?
Just a few weeks ago, it seemed unthinkableEuroleague working with the NBA and FIBA as part of the launch NBA Europe. But things may have changed with a change of presidency at the helm of Europe’s top league, since Paulius Motiejunas has been replaced by Chus Bueno.
For what? Because he worked for the NBA for a long time, as the vice president of basketball operations of the American League in Europe and the Middle East…
“We know Chus well, he worked for us for ten years” that’s how Mark Tatum reactedAdam Silver’s right hand man. “We wished him well, we congratulated him and talked to him. I think Chus should talk to the clubs he represents, but we hope that with FIBA we will all be able to sit down and continue a constructive dialogue.”
So the discourse seems to be evolving, or at least softening after the escalation of tensions in recent months.
“We’ve always said, from the beginning, that we want to work with EuroLeague to align all the players in the ecosystem, and that’s always been our goal.” encore by Mark Tatum, I assure. “That will remain our goal and I think that with Chus, someone we know well and who knows European basketball well, we might be able to build a bridge between us, FIBA and Euroleague clubs. We hope these talks will allow us to find ways to work together.”
It must be said that after meeting with dozens of potential investors in London last month, the NBA also softened its tone about its NBA Europe project. And perhaps the path of cooperation with the Euroleague, facilitated by the existing relationship with Chus Buena, is ultimately the least risky.
