Darian DeVries reveals one thing that was ‘too much’ for Indiana in Illinois loss

That was it an up and down year for Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVriesin his first season in Bloomington. Indiana lost to Illinois 71-51 on Sunday. DeVries opened after the game about what went wrong for his bad Hoosiers team.

“The offensive rebounding on their end was really too much for us to overcome,” DeVries said, according to The News-Gazette in Illinois.

Illinois outrebounded the Hoosiers, 36-22. Indiana had just two offensive rebounds in the game. The Hoosiers also struggled to defend the paint, as Illinois finished the game with 40 points.

Indiana dropped to 17-9 overall on the season with the loss. The Hoosiers, who are vying for an NCAA Tournament berth, are now 8-7 in the Big Ten. Indiana enters the Illinois game having won five of its last six contests.

Indiana basketball players struggled in the Illinois game

Indiana was able to stifle Illinois with three-point defense on Sunday. Illinois shot just 23 percent from the perimeter against the Hoosiers. Indiana also struggled; The Hoosiers shot just 25 percent from three-point range in the game.

“I actually thought we had some really good stuff, we had a pretty clean look,” DeVries added. “…We didn’t make them. The problem is we couldn’t make enough stops in that time to sustain it.”

Rebounding is an area where Indiana’s head coach wants his team to improve. Illinois grabbed 15 offensive rebounds in the game, which hurt the Hoosiers.

“We have to clear the glass better,” DeVries added, “so we can get our own transition opportunities.”

DeVries came to Bloomington this season after spending last season in West Virginia. He won 19 games in his only season in Morgantown. DeVries also led Drake to three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Indiana basketball next plays at Purdue on Friday.
