There is some truth that Irving may not be too fond of ESPN, and that could directly apply to Stephen A. Smith, as the two have gone back and forth over the years.
The most recent time was when Smith talked about Irving’s extension with the Maverickssaying that the guard deserved more than he got.
“In today’s economy, where cats get paid $55, $60 million plus, couldn’t you give this guy at least $43 to $45 million a year? Remember, he was supposed to get a player option that would have given him $43 million. So to me, at $119 million, that’s a fraction less than $40 million more than Irving de Curie said.”
Although it was a compliment, Irving didn’t take it that way and fired back at Smith.
“I’m going to talk about his contract. I’m going to talk about Stephen A’s contract and I’m going to say, ‘I don’t think you’re worth it,'” Irving said.
Prior to that, Smith would scrutinize Irving who had not received the COVID-19 vaccine, forcing him to miss court time while with the Brooklyn Nets. Smith has since apologized for his stance on it, but it was still a big issue that he would always bring up at First Takeover.
The start of the battle between Smith and Irving may have been when the guard went on First Take after being traded to the Boston Celtics, and was essentially questioned for an entire segment about why he wanted to leave Cleveland.
