Pau Gasol has invested heavily in the development of NBA Europe
Investors have a few more weeks to comment on the development of NBA Europe, the European project of the Major League. Behind the scenes, Adam Silver can count on two strong supports: Tony Parker but also Pau Gasolwho confirms his involvement behind the scenes.
“For now, my role is not defined yet. I’m just working with the NBA, with FIBA, and talking to teams to see what the evolution of the growth of basketball in Europe should be. From there, we’ll see what kind of role I end up having, whether it’s at the league level or with the team. There’s an opportunity to take a step forward and help our sport grow in Europe.”, he stated in Mundo Deportivo.
Will he take the lead? FC Barcelonaif the Catalan club ever decides to join NBA Europe? Or will he be one of the league leaders instead? Either way, he wants to help reshape the European system.
“We have to build this from the ground up”he continued. “Basketball is a sport of global importance, and I believe we have an opportunity to improve it as an experience and a spectacle, beyond the magic of the game itself. That’s exactly what we came to achieve.”
Will it be with or against the Euroleague? It’s still unclear, just like the financial aspect.
“Our ultimate goal is to transform European basketball into a sustainable model, with real growth potential, and not a loss-making sport. We have a unique opportunity to build new relationships and a different model, which offers a much greater scope for influence than what we have seen so far. We need to change our approach, define our strategy and establish a stable foundation from the very beginning.”
