Matthew Schaefer reveals healthy Olympic break

The New York Islanders are in third place in the Metropolitan Division as the Olympics continue. Only Bo Horvath and Ondrej Palat are in Milan as the rest of the team returns to practice. Some players went to the beach, others to Disney, but Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer was healthy push through the break.

“While the Islanders’ senior players spent the Olympic break in places like Mexico, Disney World and Arizona, Matthew Schaeffer told me he went home, saw family and spent some time coaching youth hockey,” News 12’s Kevin Maher reported.
Schaefer said of his coaching gig, “Yeah, it’s definitely crazy. From pre-draft to now, you get noticed a lot more. It’s funny, kids get so excited even though it’s just like, ‘I’m the same age as you.’ But yeah, it’s pretty funny when you can just coach some kid’s games and be on the bench.”
Schaefer went on to say that he was on the bench for warm-ups, supporting the local team in Ontario.
When is it The Islanders took Schaefer first overall in Junewas a bit of an unknown due to injury before the draft. But since joining the team, he’s been New York’s rookie superstar. He hit the Olympic break with 39 points in 58 games while playing over 24 minutes a night as a defender.
Schaefer was considered for Team Canada at just 18 years old, but did not make the Olympic team. He confirmed he was on the injury replacement list but was never called up. If he continues to dominate for the Islanders, he will be a fixture for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.
The Islanders continue their season against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday. This is a big matchup, as the two teams connected in the Noah Dobson trade in the offseason.
