Jeremy Sochan did not see eye to eye with Spurs’ Mitch Johnson

Ex San Antonio Spurs power forward Jeremy Sochan has yet to make his New York Knicks debut. However, he has a lot to say about his former home, which he recently revealed he may not have seen eye to eye with Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson on certain issues.

The 22-year-old revealed he wanted a bigger role in the team, something that may have been down to Spurs’ deep list.

“There’s no real opportunity in my opinion. It is what it is. It’s a deep team. Maybe I haven’t seen eye to eye with the coach. I’m just blessed to be somewhere where I can grow,” said per Athletic James L. Edwards III.

While Johnson himself has acknowledged his desire for more playing time, it seems the move was the best solution for all parties involved.

“We’ve all been very aware of his desire to be in the rotation and we’ve gotten multiple opportunities, especially recently. We wanted to do it right and make sure he has that opportunity before the year is over,” Johnson told Yahoo Sports.

The Spurs’ rotation has tightened due to roster changes and internal development priorities, and Socan’s minutes have been reduced to just 12.8 per game during the 2025-26 campaign. His departure also marked the dissolution of San Antonio’s 2022 first-round class, as none of the three selections from that draft remained with the franchise (Blake Wesley and Malachi Branham).

While Socan averaged just 4.1 points and 2.6 assists in 12.8 minutes per game, his defensive versatility and effort were never in question. Socan was simply on a team that needed more of him in terms of floor spacing and offensive ability, and he didn’t necessarily get the minutes last season to prove his worth alongside Victor Wembanyama.

That the 22-year-old will hope for changes for the better in the Knicks.
