Kon Knuepel was somehow called out during the Real Madrid game

For a number of reasons, the worlds of European soccer and the NBA don’t collide every day. However, one commentator during the recent UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and Benfica found a way to a reference to none other than the Charlotte Hornets Kon Knueppel.
And well, there were many reasons for that.
“Trying for a three, I think, like Kon Knuepel,” the commentator could be heard exclaiming during the official broadcast, according to the post on X from the Charlotte Hornets.

The incident was such that the Brazilian footballer Vinicius Jr. first pinged the ball towards the right wing, looking for Federico Valverde. The Uruguayan is known for his right foot hammer but this time he messed up.
After somewhat clumsily taking the ball under his control, Valverde unleashed a tame effort from distance towards goal as the ball flew over the keeper and out. The attempt was nowhere near the kind of three-pointer that fans are used to seeing from Kneppel’s attempts, in terms of quality.
However, Knuppel developed a knack for scoring the most incredible shots, which Valverde was also guilty of. However, unlike Knuppel, who is currently converting an incredible 43.6% of his attempts from beyond the arc, Valverde’s strike lacked accuracy and threat.
Of course, the Hornets’ Rookie of the Year candidate has already broken several major records, most recently becoming the fastest NBA star to reach 200 3-pointers. He currently leads the league with a total of 201 3-pointers, Knuppel’s immediate rise has not only led to comparisons to Cooper Flaggwho was seen by many before the season as the best rookie in the NBA this year.
It has also led to global recognition, which even football commentators are apparently noticing. Regardless, Real Madrid eventually won 2-1 despite Valverde’s effort, with Aurelien Chuameni and Vinny Jnr scoring twice.
