James Harden hopes retirement will come ‘later than sooner’

No one is immune to the effects of Father Time when it comes to professional sports. Every man eventually slows down, even those who seem immortal (like the great LeBron James). I Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Hardenwho is he is currently nursing a thumb injury that he managed en route to dropping 22 points in Sunday’s 106-102 win over the Brooklyn Nets, he knows that sports reaper will come for him one day.

Harden is still playing at a high level; he may be 36, but retirement isn’t exactly imminent for someone who is averaging nearly 25 points per game and over eight assists per contest this season. The Cavs star, however, loves basketball so much that he wants to move on as long as he canespecially when he still has the elusive championship ring to compete for and hopefully win.

“I know (retirement) is coming soon. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, but that’s the reality. Everybody has to go through this at some point. I’m just trying to keep my body in shape and play well. We’ll see what happens in the next few years. Take it one game at a time and appreciate the moments,” Harden said, via HoopsH’s Michael Scott.

The Cavs know their time in the title race is short, so instead of risking Dario Garland’s health, they went out and got Harden, who is over 10 years older than Garland.

Harden has dealt with his fair share of injury problems, suffering from hamstring issues in recent years, but he’s been very durable and has been very reliable, especially during the regular season. In the playoffs, of course, Harden will be tested and whether he could be a part of this team looking to finally get over the hump.
