Erik Spoelstra, critical consumer of zone defense
For several seasons now, no NBA team has used a zone defense more than Miami. Erik Spoelstra clearly made it an important weapon in his arsenal. Proof this season too, with 575 defensive possessions in the zone, which is the highest figure in the league in 2025/26. However, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution for the coach, who remains critical of this option.
“There are times when I hate it”, he says clear. “Because sometimes there is no definite responsibility. Sometimes we have the mindset that the zone will allow us to manage and that we don’t need to work as hard. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
Because he insists Erik Spoelstrazone defense is not for rest or should not be approached as a method of concealment. To be effective, it requires intelligence, but also effort.
“In reality, we probably burn more calories in the zone than we do in individual defense. There are a lot of different movements that we need to do.”he continues. “It’s part of our defensive system, but it’s not the only system. We’re never better than in individual defense.”
Force opposing attacks to think (too much)
But when it’s done well, the zone allows attacks to break up and disrupt in wide swathes. Kevin Durant and the Rockets took notice during their trip to Miami, facing 46 possessions (his season high) where the Heat took advantage of this defense.
“No matter what our defensive scheme is, it’s tough stuff. We were in the zone there, we took control of the spaces and we struggled to contest shots outside the circle.”analyzes the coach. “In the losses over the last three months, we’ve been shooting in the circle and on 3-point shots. There, in the zone or individually, we contested 83% of the 3-point shots in this win.”
With 111.5 points per 100 possessions, the Floridians have the fourth-best defense in the NBA behind Oklahoma City, Detroit and San Antonio. Whether he likes it a little, a lot, crazy or not at all, Erik Spoelstra knows he’s on the right track with zone defense. The players too.
“It’s a great fit because we can pull it out of the hat and be efficient with it.”reported by Davion Mitchell. “Especially against big scorers like Kevin Durant, who can change the game with his points. Putting space in front of them makes them think a little bit.”
