Luke Cornette asks the Hawks to cancel their party… at a strip club
The initiative was a surprise and is already starting to be shared. The Hawks have indeed announced a special “Magic City” night on March 16th for their reception in Orlando, with a program dedicated to one of Atlanta’s most iconic institutions. The problem: Magic City is primarily a strip club, regularly referenced in local hip-hop culture, and a dedication planned around an NBA game doesn’t sit well with everyone.
The first player to come out of silence is Luke Cornetwho posted a message on his blog asking the Atlanta franchise to reverse course. According to him, the operation conveys an image that is inconsistent with the league’s ambition to provide a safe and welcoming environment, especially for women.
“The NBA should be committed to protecting and respecting women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world. We should promote an atmosphere of protection and respect for the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers and partners we know and love. Allowing this night to go ahead without protest would reflect poorly on the potential dehumanization of the NBA community. Will the NBA intervene?
A call that, except in the case of the Hawks, is primarily intended to encourage the league to take a stand on the subject. Luke Cornett thus calls on “owners, employees and fans” to ask Atlanta to “respect a higher standard” in terms of promotion and insists on the idea of a show that is accessible to all viewers.
“We want to provide an environment where fans of all ages can safely come and enjoy basketball (…) Celebrating a strip club is not behavior consistent with this vision. I urge you to join me in calling on the Atlanta Hawks to cancel this promotion to ensure the NBA remains a safe, respectful and welcoming environment.”he continues.
For their part, the Hawks take their pick in a press release highlighting the cultural significance of the “Magic City” in Atlanta, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. DJ Escothe venue’s resident DJ, was also announced to be selecting songs before the match, while the Atlanta rapper YOU has to perform a mini-concert at halftime. The club is also highlighting its catering component: A “Magic City Kitchen” will be associated with the evening, and the Hawks store plans to sell a co-branded Hawks/Magic City hoodie.
Now it remains to be seen whether Luke Cornett’s speech will spark a broader movement and whether Atlanta, in the face of criticism, will keep its “Magic City Night” as is or choose to adjust (or cancel) the operation.
