Nick Nurse explains what went wrong in Spurs’ brutal defeat

Let me say NBC’s “Throwback Night” Philadelphia 76ers vs. San Antonio Spurs matchup didn’t go as planned would be an understatement.
Court removal of Joel Embiid, Paul George and finally VJ Edgecombe, who was sent off at half-time after a hard fall from fellow rookie Carter Bryant, the 76ers fell behind the Spurs 38 seconds into the game and never recovered, falling 78-53 at halftime and finishing a certified blowout 131-91.
What happened? How did the 76ers, even undermanned, let the game get so far away from them against a potential NBA Finals opponent? so, Nick Nurse tried to break it even if he didn’t seem to know.
“I thought we were doing a decent job of finding shots. I think it took a while, and I kept saying that during the timeout. The open shots aren’t coming as fast as they were the other night, but they’re still coming, you just have to be a little more patient and keep shooting,” Sister explained.
“And I thought, for the most part, I mean, obviously, he blocked a couple of inside shots from our bigs. But I thought, other than that, we were doing a decent job there for a while. And then we just didn’t get it going; they got a lot of turnovers. Just really, the second quarter defensively was really bad. Obviously, they were up to actually hitting the three-pointer, there was just no resistance. There was no resistance.” defensively.”
Offensively, the 76ers were a borderline disaster, with Tyrese Maxey outscoring Philadelphia’s other starters 21-10, while only two other players, Jabari Walker and Cam Payne, managed to get into double figures. Sure, Embiid, PG13 and, for half the game, Edgecombe, weren’t available, but when rotation players like Quentin Grimes, Dominique Barlow, Trendon Watford, Adem Bona and Justin Edwards combined for just 26 points, the 76ers aren’t going to win much, if any, defense.
