Speaking to Politico, Donald Trump was asked about the chances of the Iranian national team to participate in the upcoming 2026 World Cup in football tournament. No direct answerthe US president claimed he didn’t care. “I really don’t care. I think Iran is a very defeated country. They are running on fumes.”
Trump’s comments came after the president of the Iranian Football Association, Mehdi Tay, addressed the status of their World Cup team following the strikes. “What is certain is that after this attack we cannot expect to look forward to the World Cup with hope.”
Iran is currently scheduled to play New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, Belgium in Los Angeles on June 21 and Egypt in Seattle on June 26. If both the USA and Iran manage to finish second in their groups, they could potentially face each other in an elimination game on July 3, 2026 in Dallas.
