A fan rushes onto the court and rushes Donovan Mitchell in Brooklyn

A bizarre moment took place at the Barclays Center on Wednesday night as a fan stormed the pitch during the match Cleveland Cavaliers‘ 131-124 win over Brooklyn Nets, run straight to Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell. With just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter, the game was abruptly stopped when a fan sprinted to the floorphone in hand, and approached Mitchell as if trying to take a video or take a selfie.

Mitchell, visibly startled, immediately backed away as the referees blew their whistles to stop the action.

Security quickly tackled and removed the fan from the field as both teams looked on in disbelief. Players from both sides appeared shaken but remained composed as the situation was resolved. After a brief delay, the game resumed, and Cleveland was able to close out the contest despite a fierce late rally from Brooklyn.

Mitchell, who led the Cavaliers with 35 points, helped secure the win even though the incident briefly derailed the team’s momentum. “It was just a weird moment,” a Cavaliers official reportedly said after the game. “You don’t expect anyone to come across a player like that; it could have been dangerous.”

The NBA is expected to review the situation, as the league enforces a strict fan conduct policy that prohibits entering the court under any circumstances. Violators typically face lifetime bans from the arena, potential criminal charges for trespassing, and other penalties depending on local laws.

Despite the chaos, The Cavaliers kept their focus to better their early season record. Brooklyn, led by Cam Thomas and Michael Porter Jr., who both scored over 30 points, nearly erased Cleveland’s double-digit lead in the final quarter, but Mitchell’s clutch play kept the Cavs hanging on.

The incident serves as another reminder of the NBA’s ongoing efforts to protect players and maintain boundaries between fans and athletes in an era increasingly driven by social media.
