A luxury tax cut trade that could be done before the deadline

The Denver Nuggets recently received a boost from the return of Nikola Jokićalthough they dropped a tough game at the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night. Despite being near the top of the Western Conference leaderboard, some are speculating that a trade could be in store for Denver before the Feb. 5 deadline.

Recently, ClutchPoints NBA Insider Brett Siegel reported on the latest news on that front, though new data suggests Denver is more likely to make smaller cost-cutting measures before the Thursday deadline.

“As for the Nuggets, they won’t be making any significant changes at the trade deadline despite Peyton Watson set to become a highly coveted restricted free agent this summer. Instead, Denver will look to move below the tax cap, which is currently above about $400K, by making a salary-cutting move that includes one of their recent draftees,” Seay reported.

Siegel also reported on a name that could reportedly be a transfer candidate in Denver’s quest to move down the stretch.

“Hunter Tyson is a name that keeps coming up when asked about Denver. In an effort to save tax money, the Nuggets have held discussions with the Utah Jazz about Tyson, sources say,” he reported.

Tyson has run in weeks when Jokic and several other starters have been sidelined with various injuries, but overall, the former Clemson Tiger hasn’t cemented himself as part of the Nuggets’ long-term plans, so it would make sense that he’d be a name to keep an eye on if ownership is intent on helping their pockets.

Either way, the Nuggets seem happy with the team they have, which nearly swept Oklahoma City in last year’s semifinal series.

Denver will next hit the floor on Tuesday night against the Detroit Pistons.
