Aaron Holliday put rockets into orbit
The hero of this match between the Cavaliers and the Rockets could be named Donovan Mitchell. Long tormented by Houston’s defense, Cleveland’s star woke up only in the final twelve minutes, scoring 19 of his 21 points. But in “money time,” another player steals the show: Aaron Holliday.
Limited to four points before the start of the final quarter, the Rockets leader will take great pleasure in dashing any hopes of a comeback by the Cavaliers. Cleveland came back to within four lengths after erasing a 17-of-21 deficit? He responded early in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer that put Houston back up +7.
Five minutes from time, he almost sealed the fate of the match. With the Rockets’ lead down to five, he intercepted an Evan Mobley pass, drew a Donovan Mitchell foul and converted two of his own. In the process, the youngest of the holiday siblings punishes again with 3 points, then adds 2+1.
“Sometimes when you need stops and baskets, Aaron Holliday comes along., he appreciates his coach, Ime Udoku. “Three or four games in, when we started having injuries, he did it. It’s a luxury to have a guy who’s always ready.”
Heatstroke, a symbol of increased power
Buoyed by this heat wave, the Rockets regained an 11-point lead and the Cavaliers never came back, eventually losing 114–104. Coming off the bench, the 29-year-old finished the night with 18 points in 19 minutes, including 14 in the final quarter, 5/7 shooting and 3/5 3-pointers.
“I just helped my team win”summarized by Aaron Holliday. “My teammates did a good job finding open shots for me. Getting a win back is always a good thing. It gives us more energy. We’re a smart team and we’re just finding our sweet spots on offense and defense.”
On a Houston team that is starting to pile up absentees (Fred VanVleet, Dorian Finney-Smith, Tarry Eason, etc.), Aaron Holiday is taking full advantage of his opportunity. Over the Rockets’ last three games, he’s averaging 12.7 points on 64% shooting, including 54% from behind the arc. A great individual dynamic to accompany the current form of the Texans, who have won five straight before they take on the Nuggets on Friday.
