Adam Fox, Igor Shesterkin get review of injury returns

The New York Rangers lost to the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in overtime in their first game since the Olympics. They are stuck in the basement of the Eastern Conference and will certainly be sellers at the upcoming trade deadline. Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox were injured before the Olympic break, and Rangers coach Mike Sullivan gave a review their first games back.

“I thought it was OK, I think they’re capable of another level. I mean, Foxy has mixed up a lot of hockey. So it’s going to take him a while to get into the speed of the game, the timing of the game, things of that nature. He’s missed so much time. I would expect Foxy to get better with every game he plays. He just has a lot of time.”
Fox was injured during the Rangers’ Nov. 29 game against the Tampa Bay Lightning and missed a month. He played just three games before returning to the shelf, missing 14 games from Jan. 5 through Thursday night. Fox is a former Norris Trophy winner and has been instrumental in the Rangers’ success in recent years. But it hasn’t been a great year for the Harvard product or the Blueshirt.
Shesterkin allowed just two goals to the Flyers in regulation, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win for the Rangers. Getting back into the swing of the season will be key for Shesterkin as he looks to close out a disappointing season. Shesterkin’s return to Vezina Trophy-caliber play is the key to any future success for the Blueshirts.
The Rangers have already begun their rebuild by trading Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings. The choice of the word “retool” as opposed to “rebuild” seemingly spared both Fox and Shesterkin from trade rumors. But Fox avoided questions about his future on Broadway after Thursday’s loss. Shesterkin was not asked about his future.
