Adam Silver Teases ‘Serious’ Expansion Efforts

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that League plans to seriously explore the spreading this summerIt signals a potential shift in the long-term structure of the league. Silver’s comments arrived during the occurrence at Show Day Patrick on Wednesday, only days after it was originally set to spread in front Game 1 NBA Final Between Oklahoma City Thunder and Paces Indiana.
“There are cities in which it is worth thinking,” Silver said when asked if the NBA currently has a shortlist potential expansion locations. As he recognized interest in more markets, he warned that extension was not a Guaranteed outcome.
“To start saying, it’s not obvious to me that we should expand,” Silver said. “I think it’s probably time, and the reason I’m saying that something like two billion people will connect with social media, will look at some of the American city in which the growth of how much growth will lead to.”

Adam Silver: “I’m honestly not sure. … I don’t want to tease people with this (but), this is a summer that we will take it seriously.”

Silver also noticed that expansion carries and competitive and financial consequences.
“When you add franchise spread, dilute your competition – let’s extend two more teams that will compete for those same players in which we have now locked television money for the coming decade, you have two more partners.”

Despite these factors, Silver admitted that certain markets remain strong candidates for future teams.
“I said that, I believe that certain markets can potentially add to the NBA and we will look at it,” he said. “I think part of it is geographically, it is a big country, as far as we are represented across the country and over time, maybe more that we can do in Canada, and the city of Mexico is the city we talked about before.”
Silver clarified that the League has not yet met with some specific cities, but confirmed that expansion will be a key topic on NBA Board of the Governor of the meeting in Las Vegas During the summer league in July.
“We did not take any meetings with any cities,” Silver said. “We have a meeting of the committee in Las Vegas around the summer league in July. I know that we will talk about it.”
When Patrick asked whether the NBA would add teams in the next three years, silver said that the time frame remains uncertain.
“I’m honestly not sure,” Silver said. “Even in order to publish themselves in that process, I don’t understand what time they started playing. I don’t think I’m teasing people with it, (but) this is the summer that we will take it seriously.”
