Al Horford looked broken, but here’s how Jimmy Butler just saved him

Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler headed for the end Al HorfordCold streak in Sunday’s 114-83 win against the Indiana Pacers. In one of his better games of the season, Horford finished with 12 points with four 3-pointers, four rebounds and three blocks off the bench.

After the win, Horford highlighted Butler’s approach to looking for Al when it was openleading him to finish the night 4-for-6 from deep in the Warriors’ win against the Pacers, he said, per Anthony Slater of the Athletic.

“Jimmy made it clear right away that he was looking for me,” Horford said. “He’s had them a few times. He’s had layups, and he’s looking to put it out, and he’s encouraging me to shoot the ball. The passes are there. They’re on the money. I credit him a lot for getting me going, offensively. Defensively, I’m just trying to have more energy and be more active, and I kind of figure it out.”

Butler revealed that his intent to get the ball to Horford was very intentional.

“Very purposeful,” Butler said. “As great as the screens he sets on me, protecting everybody on the edge, making all the right plays, that’s right whenever he’s open, he gets the ball, every time, for sure, from me. And I’ll tell him, when I get the ball up top, I’m going to jump and jump it to you every time, so be ready to shoot in the corner.

Butler’s 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists led the Warriors to a 31-point victory.

Warriors veteran Jimmy Butler connected with Jonathan Cummingstaking on the role of mentor to begin with. Butler invited him to his home after the victory. Kuminga struggled offensively against the Pacers, something Jimmy downplayed during his postgame media availability.

“He’s actually going to come over to my place for dinner right now,” Butler said. “But what I tell you and I tell him — you’re not going to play great every night. You’re not going to play bad every night. But you never get too high when you get 79 points, and you never get too low when you get two (points). You stay in the middle and keep working. Keep doing what you do every day, and even the days should be.”

The Warriors will face the 10-1 Thunder on Tuesday.
