All-Star game finally serious? Kevin Durant returns the ball to Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic…
It’s the weekend All-Star Game. The all-star game in a new format (three teams, one of which is composed of internationals) but the question remains: will the headliners finally take the matches seriously?
For Adam Silver, this new formula should lead to more competitive matches. The speech that the NBA “commissioner” repeats with every model overhaul, without any of them actually solving the problem.
Asked about the topic after the Rockets’ loss to the Clippers, Kevin Durant expressed… a spicy opinion.
“You should ask the internationals if they plan to play seriously”, he answersa slight smile on his lips, when asked if his team will take the match seriously. “Take Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic and look at what they do in different All-Star games. Is it serious? No one asked them about it. They don’t care about the match and shoot from midfield, but the old men and the Americans wonder if they are going to play seriously…”
More specifically, international players were questioned about their intention to play the game. Jamal Murray made sure to give it his all as soon as he set foot on the floor… as he announced that his first shot would come from midfield, or even from his own camp. Joke or program? Please respond this week.
Expect a minimum of competitiveness?
For his part, Victor Vembanyama, like last year, reaffirmed his desire to approach this event with the utmost seriousness. “ I always told myself that I would never step onto the field to lose or not put myself in.”he said. “I’m the same at home. I don’t play board games thinking I’m going to lose.”
If the Frenchman improved his state of mind, Kevin Durant wanted to ease it: “He said that last year and everybody said it was the worst All-Star game in history. So we’ll see. Who knows what’s going to happen? This format could be a game-changer, who knows?”
It’s hard to prove him wrong: the 2025 edition, with a four-team format (criticized as soon as it was published) had only 4.7 million viewers, the second lowest audience in the last 25 years.
See you this week to find out if this new test will finally be able to restore prestige to the All-Star Game, which has been losing momentum for a long time. And what could disappear in the short or medium term…
