And we only saw “Wemby” while the No. 1 pick of the last draft started as a starter at the No. 1 position next to Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, Anthony Davis etc Derek Lively. For his first career possession, the former Duke tight end was sent alley-oop by Anthony Davis but was unable to finish the dunk. However, the former Lakers player took an offensive rebound and put the ball back in the circle to open the scoring.
On the Spurs side, Victor Wembanyama (40 points, 15 rebounds, 3 blocks) showed up quickly when he scored his first points on a midrange shot against Derek Lively, which started a 10-0 run in favor of San Antonio (14-8). At the end of the first act, the Frenchman gets the upper hand Find Marshallonce again in the middle distance, but the Spurs fall behind after ten minutes of play (29-28).
Victor Vembanyama in his works
For most of the second act, the two teams traded blows until Victor Wembanyama decided to take matters into his own hands. For starters, the Chesney native fakes PJ Washington and attacks the circle for his second back-to-back dunk of the game, but is also the victim of an Anthony Davis foul.
Right after, “Wemby” plays in Dallas in isolation. The latter bites into the feint of the Frenchman who rises from the middle distance and scores a new 2+1. San Antonio has continued ever since Stephen Castle (22 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) appears as Dylan Harper (15 points, 4 rebounds) scores his first NBA basket to make it 12-0 in favor of Mitch Johnson’s men (57-48).

After the break, Cooper Flagg scored the first basket of his young career, but his next shot was blocked by Victor Wembanyama, and on the counterattack, Stephon Castle sent Devin Vassell to “alley-op”. Within minutes, the Spurs superstar shines again with an isolation on Derek Lively. The Frenchman manages to find space for 3 points and he does not miss his target. A void that Dallas will not be able to fill and Jason Kidd’s teammates lose hard 125-92, while Wemby signs a perfect game with 40 points on 15 of 21 shooting, 15 rebounds, 3 blocks and… no turnovers!!!
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– Victor Vembanyama has not lost his touch : After an eight-month forced layoff due to venous thrombosis in his shoulder, the Frenchman was dazzling in his return, fully developing his offensive palette. From the “alley-oop” finished with a “reverse” to this 3+1 on Derek Lively, to the isolated play on Anthony Davis, “Wemby” was a nightmare for the Dallas defense.
– Difficult start for Cooper Flagg : Cooper Flagg had a complicated first night in the NBA. If he was able to show off the rebounds with ten catches, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft bowed out in skill with 10 points, 10 rebounds on 5 of 13 shooting.
– The clumsiness of Dallas : Cooper Flagg wasn’t the only one to miss the mark as Anthony Davis finished the game on 7/22 shooting and Klay Thompson went 4/13. Among the starters, only PJ Washington was proficient with his 17 points on 6/11 shooting.
