An All-Star return for Ja Morant is available on the NBA trade market
Several stories carry the weight of Ja Morant’s uncertain future with Tuomas Iisalo is regrouping the Memphis Grizzlies as it is NBA trade deadline looms. Once the electrifying face of Grind City’s revival, the two-time All-Star has seen his tenure marred by injuries and off-field issues. A tough campaign that left the team 16-22 in the game brought the situation to a tipping point. The Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Netsand Sacramento Kings took notice.
After near-career-low minutes, field goal percentage, three-point percentage and lowest total points average since his rookie season, Morant’s star has faded considerably from his “face of the league” trajectory. Still, multiple teams are pursuing Morant in trade talks, and rival executives believe the Grizzlies would prioritize draft picks and young players in return. With the emergence of Cedric Coward, Zach Eddy, Jalen Wells and Cam Spencer in addition to Jaren Jackson Jr., EVP Zach Kleiman is evaluating whether to reorganize or continue with Morant as the centerpiece.
This is not a fire sale. It is an exercise in judgment. There’s no incentive to “sell low,” no need for the Grizzlies to produce immediately. Morant remains under long-term contract, still in his athletic prime, and uniquely capable of commanding the world’s attention. Rivals executives draw parallels to the recent Tree Young deal, but aim higher given Morant’s broader market.
Kleiman allegedly pushing for packets which include multiple first-round picks and trades, something that exceeds the one pick (23, 2019) and the trade received for Mike Conley. Three potential landing spots could deliver the All-Star talent and draft capital Memphis desperately needs.
Kings change culture

The Sacramento Kings, desperate to escape the treadmill and make a marketing splash in the crowded California market, appear to be a fascinating partner. The first thought of curiosity Domantas Sabonis loose has evaporated with a recent meniscus injury.
DeMar DeRozan, in contrast, offers safety. It is durable, professionally reliable and stylishly portable. The 36-year-old remains a reliable player who has stepped up in Sabonis’ absence. The six-time All-Star brings playoff experience, middle-of-the-pack mastery and veteran leadership that could stabilize the playoff push. Schroder provides the secondary ball handling and perimeter shooting that the Grizzlies need. Together, they represent an immediate injection of proven NBA talent.
On the other hand, Morant isn’t just an upgrade; The 25-year-old is a cultural reset for the Kings. It changes market perception, accelerates internal timelines and overnight raises the franchise’s national profile. That’s worth two first-round picks and at least one trade. Whether Sacramento ultimately agrees determines whether this conversation goes beyond scouting calls.
The Nets are betting on Ja Morant
The Brooklyn Nets represent perhaps the clearest path to a blockbuster comeback. Morant for Michael Porter Jr. is straightforward about salary. However, with one year less contract control than Morant, the price rises. Memphis would claim Brooklyn first in 2026, New York first in 2027 (via Mikal Bridges) and Brooklyn first in 2028, minimum. The Nets, sitting on a stack of 30 future tradeable picks and a roster of recent draftees who need time, can absorb this cost.
Add Egor Demin as there would no longer be a need for a developmental guard. Morant would like to host the show for at least 36 minutes a night. Kleiman knows there is no bigger name to overtake the Knicks for the brand in the Big Apple. I am the cash register, which defines the brand. The Nets can afford the move financially, competitively and reputationally in a way that few franchises can.
That desperation for relevance, combined with Brooklyn’s embarrassment of struggling riches, creates a rare alignment of incentives. Porter provides Memphis with elite shooting and size on the wing, while Demin offers the long-term point guard project they will need after Morant.
Bulls boasting offers
Stuck in mediocrity for decades, the Chicago Bulls offer a more nuanced third option. The conversation begins with Nikola Vucevic and Kobe White, who provide Memphis with a skilled offensive center and dynamic guard. Patrick Williams and Zach Collins will also be in the mix. Neither is talented enough to be a hindrance if the decision makers in the Windy City really want Ja Morant.
Memphis could sweeten the pot by including Brandon Clark and GG Jackson in a package. Neither would be missed rotationally, especially once Edei is back to full health. This creates salary flexibility while giving Chicago the pieces of the youth movement it desperately needs.
The coldness about the deal comes, predictably, from the equity side of the equation. Chicago is unlikely to include its 2026 top-eight protected first-round pick as they scramble for another foundational piece. A realistic ceiling is a package built around the 2027 and 2029 firsts, plus trade-up rights in 2028. That’s significant, but it lacks the main value of a true All-Star return. This time only makes sense if Memphis prioritizes volume, optionality and cap flexibility over an immediate star replacement.
