An NBA insider reveals Detroit’s mindset ahead of the trade deadline

With NBA trade deadline approaching, the Detroit Pistons are a team that could be in the mix to make a move in hopes of cementing their status as contenders in the Eastern Conference. The The Pistons were one of the surprise teams season so far, currently holds the 1st place in the East standings with 24-6.

The NBA trade deadline is about six weeks away on February 5, and while the Pistons they want to improve their teamthey are not expected to be completely aggressive in the market, according to Tim McMahon of ESPN.

“If the Pistons want to be aggressive before the deadline, they have the ammunition, they have the flexibility,” McMahon said. “They don’t look at it as ‘we have to be aggressive ahead of schedule.’ They don’t go into the deadline with an aggressive mindset, they go into it with an opportunistic mindset. I think it’s probably more likely that they use the flexibility to raise another fund or two. I think they are more in Sam Presti’s thinking than a few years. They don’t want to block the development of the young guys that got them to this place.”

The Pistons have certainly taken a big leap over the past few seasons. Not long ago, they set the NBA record for most consecutive losses in league history. However, last year the Pistons took a huge leap with Jay Bickerstaff in his first season at the helm as head coach.

They finished with an overall score of 44-38 and in sixth place in the East standings. They were eventually eliminated by the New York Knicks in six games in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Although the Pistons have a solid collection of talent, it was continued development of Cade Cunningham it helped raise their status.
