And Minnesota’s offense went down again…
When entering the locker room at halftime against Memphis, c Wolves were one point ahead. First of all, out of 24 scored baskets, 18 came after an assist.
A trend that will disappear in the second half. Minnesota will finish these last 24 minutes with a terrible 32% shooting success rate, with only 8 assists for 8 turnovers…
“It was a terrible night in attack”, s’agace Chris Finch. “Our offensive decisions were disastrous, whether it was our shot selection, our turnovers, our execution. It really wasn’t good.”
The Grizzlies defense is clearly the reason for this very complicated second half. “They don’t get overwhelmed easily”analyzed by Chris Finch. But also the Wolves’ choices, as the coach pointed out.
The solution does not come from individuals alone
Julius Randle, for example, lacked lucidity, forcing himself against a very comfortable Jaren Jackson Jr. to manage him one-on-one. Result: 9/21 on the shot and 4 turnovers for the player, so a less fluid attack. “There wasn’t much movement on my part, or on the part of others”gives way to the former interior of Nix.
With Anthony Edwards out for three games, the Wolves are without their best forward, a player who can unlock closed situations like he did in the second half against Memphis. With running backs, the offensive fluidity isn’t always there, but with his talent, at least he can make a difference on his own. Without him, and with Julius Randle mired in his own bad picks, Minnesota’s offense falls flat.
“It has to be done with all five players. Sometimes, when there’s frustration, we go back to individualities.”observes and regrets Rudy Gobert. “We have players one-on-one and above all we have to think about the team. We need our attackers to be aggressive, but in the rhythm of the match. We have to make quicker decisions, we have to dribble less because then the defense is in place and it becomes more difficult. There are many ways to get the advantage without simply playing one-on-one.”
