Andre Drummond dismisses ‘sick’ view of Philly’s aggression

The The Philadelphia 76ers started the new campaign with back-to-back victories and look ready to enjoy the comeback season. Veterans Center Andre Drummond recently credited an intense offseason as the main reason the Sixers rose to early 2-0 record.

“This offseason has been tough for us,” Philadelphia center Andre Drummond told the Athletics’ Tony Jones after the team’s 125-121 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday. “We battled with no fouls called. No calls. Guys were just out there praising. We were sick of playing each other. It was good to go out there and show some aggression on other teams.”

The 32-year-old averaged 3.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 9.5 minutes in the 76ers’ first two games of the season. Drummond has provided some relief for Philadelphia as the team tries to get healthy and deal with Joel Embiid’s playing time limitation.

“I’m thrilled he was able to play so well,” 76ers head coach Nick Nurse said of Drummond. “And now I’m kind of wondering why I didn’t use it sooner. I knew eventually I’d have to use it again because Joel was only there for a few minutes in the second half. I was trying to find some spark and he did. All of a sudden, the rebound became a lot easier. We got more possessions. He made some good contributions.”

The 76ers also benefited from the play of rookie VJ Edgecombe. After dropping 34 points in the season opener against the Boston Celtics, the 20-year-old had 15 points, six rebounds and eight assists in a win over Charlotte.

Philadelphia will look to continue their hot start when the Orlando Magic come to the City of Brotherly Love on Monday night.
