Anthony Black takes the light
Ending your career is always special. So what about breaking the career record in one half? That’s what worked Anthony Black Tuesday. The back end of the Magic was tortured the Sixers defense in the first period, with 27 points for a total of 31 units (on 12/17 shooting) at the final buzzer, in 28 minutes of play. Hell of a performance for a player who has never topped 23 points.
He quickly entered the game in the first quarter, Anthony Black got in on the action with the first dunk attempt, which was eventually contested by Andre Drummond. But the No. 6 pick in the 2023 draft had the chops and proved it. His second quarter was a model of its kind, with constant pressure on Philly, first on the ball carrier and then as soon as Orlando recovered the ball.
“What impresses me the most is his aggressiveness” his coach Jamahl Mosley told the media. ” But what I’m most proud of is his ability to play on both ends of the floor. With Jalen, (Suggs) was defending Tyrese Maxey all night, jamming him, pressuring him everywhere, and then he was able to do what he did offensively. That’s what we asked of him and what we need from him game after game. »
An outstanding second quarter
Anthony Black was then able to show his speed and explosiveness on the counterattack with nine points in transition, seven on turnovers. Launched with the full ball, he continued with an outside address that we don’t necessarily know about him (32% on 3-pointers this season before the game, 4/6 on Tuesday).
“I’ve taken a few shots where people might have looked askance at me because I’m trying to be aggressive, take risks and trust myself.” he reacted after the meeting. ” When we play the right way, with intention, we can be good in attack and defense. We managed to set the tone against a good team, that’s always good. (…) Right now we are collectively really safe. We’re really confident in what we’re doing, no doubt about it. Everyone is going in the same direction and we play on our defensive identity. The rest follows offensively. »
Like this crazy second quarter on Tuesday, a huge 51-25, led by 20 points from Anthony Black, including 16 in four minutes for the first deficit of the game.
However, there is some form of logic to Anthony Black shining like this. The 21-year-old has been on the road for the past ten days and appears to have turned the corner after two first seasons in a minor role. Having become a true 6th man for the Magic, he just had his sixth game over ten points.
“He is confident, he exudes confidence.” » confirms Jamahl Mosley. ” Did you see his action in transition where he attacks the rim and goes up for a dunk (his first basket of the game)? This ability to penetrate and attack the circle is important to him. Then he confidently shoots. But I’ll go back to that, his ability to defend and then push the pace, that’s something special and we need that from him. »
Averaged 17.8 points in six games
Anthony Black, for his part, appeared to be having a lot of fun, not hesitating to hit Andre Drummond early in the third quarter on a foul by the Sixers center. ” When I’m in my match, when I’m having fun, when I’m talking, that’s when I play my best. And I think it’s like that for the whole team. This raises our level, our intensity. We did a good job playing hard and with intensity. »
This good run could offer additional weapons to the Magic, back in sixth place in the East, despite the absence of Paolo Banchero. Anthony Black’s 17.8 points on 52.7% over these last six games has nothing to do with it. ” I’m still trying to figure out what my best level is » he explained with a smile. ” I feel that I can still improve, this is only my third season. I think I can make an impact on both sides of the floor. I believe I can do it. »
After 30 points from Jett Howard during from the previous match against BostonOrlando is seeing his scouting and development work start to pay off.
